Junk Jewelry

Junk Jewelry

To some, it's just junk jewelry, something you'd toss in a Goodwill box or give to your children to play dress-up with. For those with some knowledge about costume jewelry, antiques, and an eye for design, people like Tamara Schafhauser, junk jewelry can be turned into treasured mementos.

Here's her story according to her website:

Since childhood, Tamara has always enjoyed the "hunt" for treasures. From scouring flea markets to digging through New York basement bead houses, the thrill of the "find" is her passion.

She learned a lot about "living a simple life" from watching her father-in-law William. He was a master plumber by trade and loved creating things with his hands. Together with her husband, many of William's treasures left behind were carefully sorted and selected to be included in this collection.

Each piece is crafted by Tamara using aged hardware in combination with semi precious stones and jewels. The look is fresh, unique, and all about dressed junk.

Jewelry for Mother’s Day

Jewelry for Mother's Day

Don't forget that her special day – Mother's Day – is coming next month. Are you ready? Have you even thought about what you plan to get mom this year? Remember that jewelry is never, ever a bad gift to give.

In fact, according to JCK Magazine, jewelry is "the" gift to give her this year:

Spending for Mother's Day gifts this year is anticipated to reach $13.8 billion, with the average person to spend $122.16, up from last year's $104.63, according to the NRF 2006 Mother's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

The study, conducted by consumer market intelligence BIGresearch, also found that high prices at the gas pumps will not deter purchases of luxury gifts.

Consumers planning to splurge on jewelry will spend $2.1 billion compared to $1.7 billion in 2005. Those planning to surprise mom with a trip to the spa or a massage will spend a total of $928 million, compared to last year's $644 million. Treating mom to a special outing such as brunch or dinner will cost consumers a total of $2.8 billion, up from $2.2 billion last year.

"On Mother's Day, moms across the country will reap the benefits of having one of the hardest jobs in the world," said NRF President and ceo Tracy Mullin. "Regardless of age or income, most people enjoy showering mom with lavish and thoughtful gifts to show their appreciation."

So, what's it going to be? A mother's bracelet? A new pair of gold earrings? Decisions. Decisions!

Gold Jewelry Prices Jump

Gold Jewelry Prices Jump

It's no news – I've already been talking about how gold and platinum prices are going up. But, of course, the price increases of precious metals has a trickle down affect. That means for those of us purchasing jewelry we can expect prices to start (if they haven't already) rising.

From Gold rush may push jewelry prices up:
Rising gold prices have been great for investors. But if you're buying a piece of gold jewelry this spring — ouch.

As wedding season approaches, prices for gold jewelry are expected to jump 10 percent to 20 percent over last spring, the World Gold Council, a gold-mining industry trade group, estimates.

"It's going to be very tough to break the news to consumers that after so many years of stable prices, prices have to go up," says Peggy Jo Donahue, a spokeswoman for Jewelers of America, a trade organization for jewelers.
The price of gold hit $632.60 a troy ounce Wednesday, the highest since 1980. It's is up 46 percent from a year ago and 138 percent from 2001.

The jewelry-store price of gold isn't soaring quite that fast. In part, that's because gold makes up only about 25 percent of the price of a piece of jewelry, notes Whitney Sielaff, editorial director of National Jeweler magazine. The rest comes from designer and overhead costs.

Stiff competition in the jewelry business, too, should help moderate the effect on consumers.

Cartier Brings Back Love Bracelet

Cartier Brings Back Love Bracelet

It's baaaccckkk….Maybe you don't remember this jewelry line from Cartier so it may be totally new to you, but they are bringing back the Love Bracelet. This was a favorite of celebrities back in the late 1960s and today's famous faces are still drawn to this unique and fun jewelry design.

From a company press release: Today, the "Love Bracelet" remains the world's most celebrated and desirable wrist ornament.

The continuing popularity of the bracelet led to the development of additional products in this motif, starting with the "Precious Love Bracelet" (with diamonds) in 1979, and followed by the "Love Ring" (1983), the "Love Cufflinks" (1984), and the "Love Earrings" (1985).

New customers every day continued to discover for themselves the special wit and style of the Love Bracelet. And, at the same time, another whole generation of celebrity wrists appeared throughout the '70s and '80's "locked up" in this famous Cartier shackle: Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Joan Collins, Jane Seymour, Princess Diana, Linda Evans, Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Rogers, Reggie Jackson, John McEnroe, Elton John, Tori Spelling, Jane Fonda, Liza Minelli… the list goes on and on. In 1983 when Tina Turner made her spectacular coming back on the rock and soul stage as "a lionness" , Tina Tuner appeared with the Love bracelet at her wrist as "her only jewel she loved." Elton John used to wear it by wearing several bangles on his wrist in the diamond versions and Madonna wore it in the very early years of her fame.

Sharon Stone also is seen wearing the Love Bracelet in the 1998 movie " Sphere" directed by Barry Levinson.

Today the Cartier Love bracelet continues to be showcased on the wrist of fashionable clients as well as celebrities including: Jamie Fox, Mary J. Blige, Lindsay Lohan and most recently, Michelle Williams.

And, of course, if you get the bracelet you also have to get the screw driver so that your lover can, well, put on your bracelet for you. The screws in the bracelet really work and that's how you attach it to your wrist.

Computers Help Make Jewelry

Computers Help Make Jewelry

Computers are everywhere, and now that includes your local jewelry shop.

From Computers help produce custom jewelry:

If you go to an independent jeweler these days, you might look at different designs to find ideas. But at some of them, instead of looking at a paper sketch of a custom piece, you'll look at a computer screen.
West & Co. Diamonds Jewelry in Webster was among the first jewelers in the area to incorporate computer-aided design into its business. [...]
Customization is crucial for small, independent jewelers, Nytch said. Shoppers are willing to pay slightly more for a custom design.
"The nature of retail is changing," said Nytch, 46. "It's gotten really challenging. The industry is going to be much different."

Unique designs are the latest trend in jewelry sales, Nytch said. The baby boom generation preferred brand names when it came to jewelry design, but many younger people would rather have a piece of jewelry created specifically for them, he said.

No Jewelry in the Dryer

No Jewelry in the Dryer

As part of the next round of Carnivale de Couture, Final Fashion asked:

So this week I want to invite anyone who wants to join to describe that favourite outfit that you always like to wear still warm from the dryer. Bonus points if you've got pictures! What does your outfit say about you?

Of course, this has nothing to do with jewelry because hopefully I will never accidentally put my jewelry in a clothes dryer. But, this is still a fun question even if leaves the topic of jewelry out.

I would have to say my favorite "outfit" – if you want to call it that – out of the dryer are my PJs. I especially enjoy good old cotton drawstring pajama bottoms. Normally, I'm wearing these and an extra large t-shirt and of course, my comfy Isontoner cat slippers with the little jeweled eyes.

This is my favorite outfit out of the dry is because it is so comfortable, but also this represents home to me – even if it means I'm home and working at the keyboard wearing my PJs!

Official Coutorture Launch

Julie Fredrickson (aka Almostgirl) is proud to announce the official launch of her new darling – Coutorture.

A fashion blog conduit of sorts, Coutorture covers news (such as the Kim Hargreaves Scent of Summer Collection pictured here and originally blogged about by Coquette); fashion advice; products; parties; sales; videos and podcasts; and well, pretty much all things blogged about all things fashion related.

I didn't see a ton of jewelry goodies yet over there, but I'm sure it is coming, especially since The Jewelry Weblog is one of Coutorture's partners.

If you haven't made your way over there, now is the time.
