Arista Fine Jewelry Collection

29 Aug

Arista designs are inspired by the art, architecture, and mythology of the ancient world. Each adornment is individually crafted on the beautiful island of Bali from sterling silver and 18k gold by some of the finest silversmiths and artisans in the world. Opportunities to be adorned with Arista vary from old world masquerades to an upscale, modern dinner party.

silver and citrine ring
Arista Rectangle Citrine Ring
Lady's sterling silver and eighteen-karat yellow gold engraved ring mounted with a faceted natural lemon citrine.

Arista fuses these two periods of time into one magnificent jewelry line. Every piece in the line is highly detailed and carefully accented with a dark oxidization. This art emulates the practice of old world because jewelry in that time period did not have tarnish resistant coatings. Therefore the high points of any jewelry kept its shine by the owner constantly wearing it.

silver and blue topaz ring
Arista Round Sky Blue Topaz Engraved Ring
Lady's Arista sterling silver and eighteen-karat yellow gold engraved ring mounted with a faceted natural sky blue topaz.

The craftsmen who create Arista's fine jewelry are as attuned with nature as their ancestors. So, perhaps, it is fitting that Arista derives its name from the brightest star in the constellation Virgo – as clear and visible in the unpolluted night sky over the peaceful, idyllic island of Bali as it was centuries ago.

silver and gold ring
Arista Large Rectangle Engraved Ring
Lady's Arista sterling silver and eighteen-karat yellow gold large rectangle engraved ring.

Some jewelry that is crafted in the style of centuries past is too curvy and swirly and over the top for my taste. Clean contemporary designs are definitely my favorites. But if you throw a large gorgeous gemstone in the mix and keep the curlicues to a minimum, I find it quite attractive. I fell in love with some of their rings – the gemstones are breathtaking, and the prices are affordable.

And if you like all the patterns and flourishes, you'll find lots to like in the Arista Jewelry Collection. You can see the fine Old World craftsmanship in these pieces. Click on the link to see more of this fabulous jewelry.

Irish Claddagh Rings

26 Aug

The Legend
The original Claddagh ring is generally attributed to Richard Joyce of Galway. Joyce departed from Claddagh, a small fishing village where the waters of the River Corrib meet Galway Bay, on a ship enroute to the plantations of the West Indies. His ship was captured by Mediterranean Algerian pirates and the crew were sold as a slaves. Richard Joyce was sold to a Moorish goldsmith who trained Richard in his craft.

Width 7mm

Richard Joyce soon became a master goldsmith, and handcrafted a ring for the woman at home he could not forget. In 1689, he was released after William III came to the throne of England and concluded an agreement whereby all his subjects who were held in captivity by the Moors were to be allowed return home.

gold and silver ring
Sterling Silver & 14k Gold Claddagh Fusion Ladies Ring
6mm from top of crown to tip of heart.
Available in sizes 5 – 9.
Handmade in Ireland.

The Moorish goldsmith offered Richard his only daughter in marriage and half his wealth if he would remain in Algiers. Richard declined and returned to Claddagh to find that the woman he loved had never married. He gave her the ring he had made, and they were married. He set up a goldsmith shop in the town and began making rings. The earliest claddagh rings to be traced bear his mark and the initial letters of his name.

designer gold ring
Ladies 14k Yellow Gold Trinity Knot Claddagh Ring
7.2mm from the top of the crown to the tip of the heart.
Handmade and hallmarked in Ireland.

According to tradition, the ring is taken to signify the wish that Love and friendship should reign supreme. The hands signify friendship, the crown loyalty, and the heart love. These rings were kept as heirlooms with great pride and passed from mother to daughter.

Today, the ring is worn extensively across Ireland, either on the right hand with the heart turned outwards showing that the wearer is fancy free, or with the heart turned inward to denote that he or she is spoken for. The pride of placement is on the left hand with the heart turned in, indicating that the wearer has found true love.

Unique Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Micky Roof was introduced to the art of jewelry making by her high school art teacher, Edward Hoops, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She earned a B.S. in Art Education from Mansfield State College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, where she majored in jewelry design and fabrication; she took workshops with Stanley Lecthin from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, trained at the Cheltenham Art Center in Philadelphia, and studied hollowware construction with Hans Christianson of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Micky Roof has been a jewelry designer since 1972, specializing in custom designed, one-of-a-kind jewelry for a discriminating clientele who seek jewelry that makes a unique, personal statement. During this time, Ms. Roof has grown from a one-person studio to a shop of ten; her atelier is located on the Cayuga Lake Waterfront in Ithaca, New York.

Ms. Roof's trademark is her innate ability to go beyond the boundaries of conventional design into areas that reflect natural elements, using only extraordinary gems and precious materials to express these themes. Ms. Roof's work has been shown in several important galleries in the United States, and is collected by clients nationally and internationally.

14k Yellow Gold Dangle Earrings

Uncompromising quality (reflected in the materials she uses, and in the execution of her craft) is a consistent characteristic of Ms. Roof's creations. "You can absolutely find less-expensive jewelry," she says, "and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But, it's very unlikely that you'll find this level of quality in a lower price range. Superior quality has always been extremely important to me, and to my art…and in that context, our prices are absolutely realistic. For the consumer, the selection process depends upon knowing what's out there, and having a good sense of what will make you happy."

Artist Statement

The inspiration for my current body of work came to me as I stepped out my front door one fall afternoon. I have two majestic old white birch trees, which in this area of New York State are a real treasure. I was looking at the texture of their limbs and the fantastic colors of fall, and wondered how I could translate this into a piece of jewelry. This inspiration soon found me rendering the delicate textures of birch twigs and sticks in precious metals.

As I am also an avid collector of opals, I chose to put these two passions together – combining the stick shapes with the brilliant and varied colors of opals. The result is the Twig Collection. This body of work seems to have no end, like nature itself. This is the kind of design that I have been seeking for many years. There is no language barrier, nor cultural barrier. It is an expression that all human beings can recognize.

In addition to her own creative self-expression, Ms. Roof is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of public support for the arts in our communities.

Anna Whitmore Designer Jewelry

20 Aug

Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Anna Whitmore began her journey in jewelry design while still in high school; over the following years, her education within the craft of metalworking continued, though it was not a central part of her life. In 2003, with the encouragement of those close to her, Anna made the decision to plunge into the unknown and begin her own design company. Anna Whitmore Jewelry Design was born.

Influenced by the subtleties of the natural world, jeweler Anna Whitmore combines hand-stamped pieces of oxidized silver with pearls, gemstones, and gold to create stunning, hand-fabricated pendants and earrings. These intricate pieces include stamped botanical designs created by the artist, featuring symbolically important flowers, leaves, and seed pods – White Oak leaves for independence, Stonecrop flowers for tranquility, Olive leaves for peace, Cedar cones for strength.

Anna Whitmore has been making jewelry for more than 10 years. She received jewelry and design training at the Mendocino Art Center and Santa Rosa Junior College. She works from her studio in beautiful Sonoma, California, and her jewelry can be found in fine galleries and boutiques around the country.

Japanese Keshi Pearls
Keshi pearls are a rare form of freshwater pearl. These pearls are only harvested every three years and are difficult to find in a high quality shape and luster. Anna uses these pearls in her designs because of their beautiful and uniquely organic shape.

Semiprecious Stones
All semiprecious stones used in Anna's designs are of natural origin (no dyed or heat treated stones), and are chosen for consistency in color and quality of cut.

Oxidized Sterling Silver
Much of Anna's work features oxidized sterling silver, which becomes more lustrous over time, and with wear it may begin to brighten on exposed surfaces and remain dark in recessions. Oxidized silver cannot be cleaned with chemicals; if necessary, use an old toothbrush, dish soap, and warm water.
