Marcia Moran was born, raised, and educated in Brazil. Inspired by her father, she became a dentist in the early 90s, and started her own dental practice in Sao Paulo in 1994, but she always wanted to work with fashion and jewelry. In 2003, she moved to Los Angeles and decided to make her dream come true. She is now the owner and founder of Marcia Moran Jewelry Designs.

Brushed 18k Gold Plated Linked Bracelet. Large, lightweight, interlocking chain measuring 7" long. Adjustable clasp and hook closure.

Moran's pieces are clever and kitschy, with nautical touches, lots of gold, and luscious gemstones. I can't tell if she makes her own jewelry now, or if she is still importing pieces from Brazil – more than likely a combination of the two. I love the soft sheen of the brushed gold and the simplicity of her designs. These pieces won't be out of style any time soon, and the 18k gold plating makes her jewelry affordable.

Micky Roof Handcrafted Jewelry

21 Aug

Unique Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Micky Roof was introduced to the art of jewelry making by her high school art teacher, Edward Hoops, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She earned a B.S. in Art Education from Mansfield State College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, where she majored in jewelry design and fabrication; she took workshops with Stanley Lecthin from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, trained at the Cheltenham Art Center in Philadelphia, and studied hollowware construction with Hans Christianson of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Micky Roof has been a jewelry designer since 1972, specializing in custom designed, one-of-a-kind jewelry for a discriminating clientele who seek jewelry that makes a unique, personal statement. During this time, Ms. Roof has grown from a one-person studio to a shop of ten; her atelier is located on the Cayuga Lake Waterfront in Ithaca, New York.

Ms. Roof's trademark is her innate ability to go beyond the boundaries of conventional design into areas that reflect natural elements, using only extraordinary gems and precious materials to express these themes. Ms. Roof's work has been shown in several important galleries in the United States, and is collected by clients nationally and internationally.

yellow gold earrings
14k Yellow Gold Dangle Earrings

Uncompromising quality (reflected in the materials she uses, and in the execution of her craft) is a consistent characteristic of Ms. Roof's creations. "You can absolutely find less-expensive jewelry," she says, "and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But, it's very unlikely that you'll find this level of quality in a lower price range. Superior quality has always been extremely important to me, and to my art…and in that context, our prices are absolutely realistic. For the consumer, the selection process depends upon knowing what's out there, and having a good sense of what will make you happy."

Artist Statement

The inspiration for my current body of work came to me as I stepped out my front door one fall afternoon. I have two majestic old white birch trees, which in this area of New York State are a real treasure. I was looking at the texture of their limbs and the fantastic colors of fall, and wondered how I could translate this into a piece of jewelry. This inspiration soon found me rendering the delicate textures of birch twigs and sticks in precious metals.

As I am also an avid collector of opals, I chose to put these two passions together – combining the stick shapes with the brilliant and varied colors of opals. The result is the Twig Collection. This body of work seems to have no end, like nature itself. This is the kind of design that I have been seeking for many years. There is no language barrier, nor cultural barrier. It is an expression that all human beings can recognize.

In addition to her own creative self-expression, Ms. Roof is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of public support for the arts in our communities.

Anna Whitmore Designer Jewelry

20 Aug

Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Anna Whitmore began her journey in jewelry design while still in high school; over the following years, her education within the craft of metalworking continued, though it was not a central part of her life. In 2003, with the encouragement of those close to her, Anna made the decision to plunge into the unknown and begin her own design company. Anna Whitmore Jewelry Design was born.

Strength Circle Necklace

Influenced by the subtleties of the natural world, jeweler Anna Whitmore combines hand-stamped pieces of oxidized silver with pearls, gemstones, and gold to create stunning, hand-fabricated pendants and earrings. These intricate pieces include stamped botanical designs created by the artist, featuring symbolically important flowers, leaves, and seed pods – White Oak leaves for independence, Stonecrop flowers for tranquility, Olive leaves for peace, Cedar cones for strength.

She works from her studio in beautiful Sonoma, California, and her jewelry can be found in fine galleries and boutiques around the country.

Japanese Keshi Pearls
Keshi pearls are a rare form of freshwater pearl. These pearls are only harvested every three years and are difficult to find in a high quality shape and luster. Anna uses these pearls in her designs because of their beautiful and uniquely organic shape.

Semiprecious Stones
All semiprecious stones used in Anna's designs are of natural origin (no dyed or heat treated stones), and are chosen for consistency in color and quality of cut.

Oxidized Sterling Silver
Much of Anna's work features oxidized sterling silver, which becomes more lustrous over time, and with wear it may begin to brighten on exposed surfaces and remain dark in recessions. Oxidized silver cannot be cleaned with chemicals; if necessary, use an old toothbrush, dish soap, and warm water.

Bongfeldt strives for an elegant, modern look through simple shapes and repetition of form. The use of pearls is meant to evoke ball bearings, while also referencing their inherent natural beauty.

Danielle Miller grew up in a steel mill town in the Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania. Growing up surrounded by beautiful rolling hills juxtaposed by bridges, railroads, and industry greatly affected her design sensibility. Artist Statement
Clean, simple geometric forms are the building blocks of my designs, which are inspired by architecture, machines, toys, and nature. By combining these seemingly different influences, I am exploring the concept of jewelry as a playful object.

My present work consists of jewelry with kinetic elements designed to attract and engage the attention of the wearer. These articulated parts rely on the action of the wearer for motion. This action can be a simple turn of the body or a deliberate manipulation of the movable parts.

This kinetic aspect of my work creates an intimate and unique relationship between the jewelry and the wearer. My jewelry, by definition, is not only an object of personal adornment but also an object of personal interaction and recreation.

I now make my home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina with my husband Ben Gilliam and our cats, Olivia and Fredo. Ben, also a metal artist, teaches at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.
