Hooping it Up with Toby Pomeroy

Hooping it Up with Toby Pomeroy

A search for the Toby Pomeroy web site provides just a picture (posted left) and email address, so I had to do a little more surfing for you. I guess, for whatever reason, Toby P doesn't feel the need to have a real web presence. Maybe it's because there are lots of places on line to view and purchase this jewelry.

For example, I found lots of the designer's fabulous hammered hoop earrings at Moon Dance. Pictured are a pair measuring 32mm and made from 14kt gold. I know. It's a pretty basic design, but can't you see yourself wearing this a lot? At 32mm, I'd say they are about the size of an old 50 cent coin.

Manika Jewelry offers hoops as well as this hoop style cuff bracelet.

An added bonus of this site is some information about the designer that I found really cool:

Toby Pomeroy's art has always drawn upon global influences and principles of sustainability. Conflicted by the intolerable impacts of conventional precious metals mining, Toby asked the nations largest gold suppliers and refiners if they would provide pure gold and silver derived entirely from reclaimed sources. They agreed, and this ground-breaking initiative became Toby' Pomeroy's source of 100% reclaimed gold and silver.

So, basically, he's using recycled (aka reclaimed) metal in her finished jewelry pieces. Clever.

Sterling or Platinum?

Sterling or Platinum?

Now that platinum has become so popular, white metal has really made it's way into the "in" jewelry crowd over the last few years. I've always liked silver because you can buy so much of it for so little, and of course, who doesn't like platinum or white gold? But, they can be kind of pricey, especially now that the cost of precious metals have skyrocketed. So, companies like Sterling Reputation have found a good middle ground, using sterling silver metals but giving them a rhodium finish. Their slogan then is "The look of platinum with a silver price tag." Rhodium is part of the platinum family of metals and thus keeps it nice and bright and low on tarnish.

Pictured is their Vine Bracelet with Clear Crystals Bracelet. And, of course, they have a necklace and earrings to match. These are just a few of a pretty large selection you can find on the Sterling Reputation web site.

Feminine Feminist Jewelry

With Mother's Day less than a week away, I am still celebrating woman power this week, and that includes some silver jewelry from the Feminist Majority On-Line Store.

Pictured are "Women's Power Earrings:"

These earrings by designer M'lou Brubaker feature silver medallions on fishhook earrings. Called "She Holds Her Power in Her Own Hands," the medallions display hands that hold a women's symbol and form the sign of "woman," from the ancient symbol of women's creative power.

They have other earrings and some wonderful silver matching necklaces as well.

The feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), which was founded in 1987, is a cutting edge organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive health, and non-violence. In all spheres, FMF utilizes research and action to empower women economically, socially, and politically. Our organization believes that feminists – both women and men, girls and boys – are the majority, but this majority must be empowered.

Two Tone David Tishbi Rings

Two Tone David Tishbi Rings

I'm a major fan of mixing up metals. We just don't see enough of it. Part of my love for two or even three tone metal jewelry designs is the fact that I like them all, so I have a hard time deciding. Also, though who doesn't stop and take a second look when you have, say for example, yellow gold mixed with platinum?

If you also like mixing it up with metals, then you'll enjoy these rings from David Tishbi:

David Tishbi has dedicated years of hard work in locating and acquiring elegant jewelry created with highest level of quality and workmanship. He was able to find that balance in this collection of handcrafted jewelry, produced in Israel by expert artisans. The result is a marriage between the designers' rich imagination and a great command of fine materials such as silver, gold, natural and man-made stones.

David Tishbi Handcrafted Jewelry specializes in a "two-tone" jewelry process. This method utilizes the striking contrast of 14 karat gold and sterling silver, creating a unique style in contemporary jewelry design. In addition to our "two-tone" jewelry, our collection also includes some pieces designed in either solid gold or solid silver. Our pieces are set with genuine and simulated gemstones including: amethyst, topaz, garnet, diamond, pearl, moonstone, quartz, tourmaline, and more.
Sterling silver punctured band with some wholes filled with14k rose gold.
Sterling silver ring surrounded by alternating silver flower bands and 14k yellow gold bands.
Oxidized sterling silver band with a 14k gold edge and sterling silver filigree.

I appreciate how these look like they were actually made by some body rather than stamped out of a mold, the fabricated looks versus casting.

As an ex-ballet dancer now old lady just trying to fight the battle of the bulge, I have a number of exercise videos I do on a regular basis, among them are a few Pilates DVDs. Let me tell you! They are tough! But even still, Pilates is a very popular form of exercise these days because, well, it's tough and it is a great way to tone and stretch at the same time. Now you can have your Pilates and your jewelry too with a new line of Pilates inspired jewelry designed by Pilates Instructor Linda Moeller:

Based in Folsom, California, the Core Links jewelry line is designed with fitness and comfort in mind to ensure each piece can be worn during any workout. The debut line consists of bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and anklets; each designed by Ms. Moeller and delicately hand-crafted by artisans in 925 silver or 14k gold.

An expert instructor and practitioner, Ms. Moeller was inspired by favorite Pilates poses from her own practice of the exercise form when designing these wearable representations of Pilates moves. Additionally, by wearing the pieces herself during workouts and seeking feedback from her clients, Ms. Moeller achieves the most wearable forms and designs in her jewelry line.

"I'm constantly intrigued by the combination of beauty, grace and power in the practice of Pilates," said Ms. Moeller. "I want to elevate everyone's fitness experience in mind, body, and soul. Core Links is a perfect way for me to reflect my passion for fitness through artful design".

Gold Demand Slows in India

Gold Demand Slows in India

Perhaps because of the cultural significance of gold in India, this country tend so be a meter for others in the gold and jewelry industry. Seems like they are going through a little gold slump right now according to the article, Gold jewellery demand dips:

Indian women are no longer dipping into their grandmas' jewellery box to get inspired for buying gold. Platinum, diamonds and rubies for them apparently shine more.

According to the latest report released by London-based precious metal consultancy GFMS, India saw a 90 tonne drop in demand for gold jewellery in 2006.

The fall in gold demand was not limited just to India. The report states that World jewellery fabrication demand fell 16 per cent to a 15-year low of 2,280 tonnes in 2006.

GFMS report further adds that the demand for gold jewellery worldwide in 2007 is expected to decline further with India been no exception.

"Globally, gold demand was affected due to a shift toward lower gold weights and more gem-set ornaments. This led to the fall in jewellery segment," says Philip Klapwijk, executive chairman, GFMS.

Though jewellery houses refuse to accept that the demand for gold jewellery is coming down, they do agree that the demand for stone-based jewellery is on the rise.

Besides the increase popularlity of gemstone jewelry, I have to also wonder about the trend in platinum we continue to see.

Silver Jewelry Trend Report

Silver Jewelry Trend Report

According to Mine Web, the Silver Institute has just published a trend report on silver, especially targeting jewelry, and things look pretty good for silver jewelry. This is really not a huge surprise since, while the cost of silver has gone up a good deal over the last year or so, you still can’t beat silver as the most economical metal for jewelry these days. Really, everything has gone up, silver, gold, and platinum.

From Silver Institute publishes GFMS global silver jewelry analysis report:

The Silver Institute Thursday released a detailed analysis on trends in the global silver jewelry market conducted by London precious metals consultants GFMS.

The study found that silver jewelry consumption is still heavily skewed towards western markets, which pushed fabrication higher in top jewelry manufacturing centers Thailand, Italy and China. In 2005 silver jewelry accounted for one-fifth of total jewelry fabrication and 19% of international silver demand.

Globally, twice as much silver as gold ends up in jewelry while demand for these two metals dwarfs platinum and palladium, according to the study. “Taking all four precious metals together, silver’s share of total precious metals jewelry volume increased from 60.5% in 1999 to 65.6% in 2005.”

However, GFMS’s research discovered large differences in the ratio of silver: gold jewelry consumption on an individual country basis.

While gold was by far the dominant precious metal on a value basis, GFMS suggested that “in reality, and in particular at the retail level, silver holds its own rather better in the value stakes due to the much higher markups on silver than on gold, platinum or palladium jewelry.

Argento Vivo Silver Jewelry

Argento Vivo Silver Jewelry

Nothing beats sterling silver jewelry for affordable elegance, and with summer coming in just a few short months (hey, March is almost outa here…can you believe it?), this means time to toss on some sterling bangles and dramatic necklaces and earrings.

I love this hammered collection from the Argento Vivo web site:

The Argento Vivo signature collection is inspired by the most luxurious elements of life: high-fashion, exotic travel, timeless architecture and the ageless craftsmanship of artisans. Each Argento Vivo Signature piece is hand casted and hand polished to ensure the integrity and quality of the collection. To enhance the natural beauty of the silver, each piece is also e-coated, which is a high-tech anti-tarnish process, to maintain a lustrous, highly-polished shine.
