The Double Tour

The Double Tour

Rediscovering Hermes is a bit like picking up a favorite book. It hasn't changed, but you have. Still, you reconnect in all the right places.

Okay, the analogy is a little over-done, but there's truth in it.

My rediscovery of Hermes started with their watch line. I met a particularly stylish woman who had a telltale double tour leather watchband curled around her slender wrist.

It looked like a Hermes Cape Cod PM Watch. I swear it had a brown strap.

The next day, I saw the woman again, and noticed that she was wearing the same double tour strap, but this time it was black. Good God – could she have more than one?

I expect to see her again later this week, and I confess that I hope she'll have the orange one. If I can't have three, well at least she can.

If you're going to have more than one watch, why not have Hermes? We already know these watches will be with us for a very long while, and I, for one, will appreciate them for years to come.

A Timeless Watch

A Timeless Watch

There's something about a gold pocket watch – timeless (no pun intended) with a whiff of nostalgia. Perhaps that's why a lost pocket watch always makes for such a sad story.

This lost watch story has a happy ending. A teenaged grocery store employee, Piero Ramos, spotted a gold watch in the trash behind the store. He traced the owner of the watch from the inscription on the back, and returned it to its rightful owner, Bill Iwanicki.

The pocket watch, it turned out, belonged to Bill's grandfather. It was given to him by Henry Ford when he retired from Ford Motor Company. The watch had been stolen from their home 51 years earlier.

Henry Ford had good taste; a gold pocketwatch is a great gift. You can find beautiful antique versions at my favorite used watch store here. Inscribe them with your loved one's name. As long as his name isn't John Smith, it will be easily identified as his for decades to come!

Date With a Rolex

Date With a Rolex

Sometimes you're just in the mood to indulge in a classic. The Rolex Day-Date is just that indulgence.

Okay, I confess, like a crush from afar, I've always wanted one.

I'm carried away by Rolex's snazzy video on their website advertising the watch. It's very smooth: modern and classic at the same time. The Day Date can be had in white gold, yellow gold, Everose gold or platinum. It comes in two sizes: 36 mm and 41 mm.

Watchsavings.com carries the platinum version I covet (with the blue dial) for a mere $42,975.

That stops me cold.

There is a number at which I simply cannot imagine justifying a purchase. $42,975 would be that number.

Fortunately, Rolex makes the equally coveted Oyster Perpetual, one model of which can be had here for a mere $3,142. With a lovely pale pink face, it isn't quite as nice as the pale blue, but I have faith that if I wait around for a year or two, my blue face might come out in steel.

And then? Whatever my mood, I'll indulge, and my crush will finally become the love affair it was always meant to be.

Swatch Watches

28 Apr

Swiss Designer Watches

In the mid-seventies, the Swiss watch industry was in the midst of its worst crisis ever. The Japanese competition had been outclassed in 1979 with the launch of the Delirium, the world's thinnest wristwatch with a limited number of components. But the event that marked the upturn in the industry's fortunes was the founding of SMH, the Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries. And its answer to the crisis was Swatch – a slim plastic watch with only 51 components (instead of the usual 91 parts or more) that combined top quality with a highly affordable price.

Gai Mattiolo Watches

26 Dec

Fashion and Watch Designer

Gai Mattiolo's passion for fashion was evident even as a child and continued to develop throughout his life. In 1987, having completed studies at the scientific academy, Gai Mattiolo was prepared to show his first ready-to-wear fashions in Milano. It was a practical collection, marked by the suits in exclusive fabrics and the ironic cuts which would later become his calling card.

Commercial success did not elude the young designer and a new line was soon born, Gai Mattiolo Couture, a high-fashion line founded on excellent distribution, tailoring, and creativity. Mattiolo was seen as a rising star of Italian fashion in the 1990s, when his sexy, over-the-top style, laden with gold and precious beading, wowed the upscale ladies from his native Rome. His fame soon spread to the Milan and Paris runways.
